Back in January of 2009 my Fiancé (boyfriend at the time) and I attended a dinner for an organization he belongs to. During cocktail hour we decided, along with another couple, to book a trip to Aruba in March 2009.
I love Aruba, it’s my most favorite island on the planet. It’s easy to get to, it has Dunkin Donuts and Bennihana’s and not to mention the most amazingly clear water. ahhh.. so beautiful.
Little did i know, at this time, that there was a scheme brewing, and I wasn’t involved.
The winter went by and slowly our departure date came upon us. The only snowstorm we had that winter happened to be the one that canceled all flights, including ours. The other couple wasn’t set to leave until Wednesday, obviously they got to Aruba, we didn’t.
During the cancellation announcement i was frantically trying to find another flight. I was told time and time again no flights for over a month. I was devastated. I cried, and my SO went into action.
As i was leaving the room we were in to go unpack my bags, he stopped me and asked me to marry him. I thought he was BS’ing me until he opened his hand and there was the ring. A gorgeous ring it is too. The tears of sorrow quickly became tears of joy.
I called my Mom first, then my Dad whom explained to me that he was in on it. My Fiancé actually contacted my Dad to ask him for my hand in marriage. What a great guy!
Meanwhile, my friend that was due to leave for Aruba in a couple of days was frantically trying to get us a flight. When i told her that I had gotten engaged she didn’t sound very happy in a weird sort-of way. I now know why, but at the time i was just a tad upset!
The next day i did get another flight booked and we were heading out a couple of days after her and her husband so all was not lost. (We at least got to spend a day with them YAY!)
When we got to Aruba all of us went to dinner where she told me everything and what her roll was and i was so moved. We visited the pier in which this whole “proposal” was supposed to go down, and thankfully it was thwarted. It was extra windy there that day and surf was very rough due to a storm in the Atlantic somewhere. Had he dropped the ring it would have been gone forever, or until someone with a metal detector picked it up!
Though the proposal didn’t go as everyone had hoped and planned, it did happen. I am so happy to be marrying one of the greatest guys in the world.
