Have you ever run your credit score?
Have you have ever run your credit report annually? Heck even in the last 5 years?
If the answer to either of these questions is “no” ask yourself why not?
Have you been one of the unfortunates that have fallen victim to the economy and had your credit card company down-size your credit limit? Did you know that negatively impacts your credit score even though it’s not your fault?
I have run my “report” every year for the past 4 years. Every year i find a discrepancy and have to dispute it. Today not being an exception.
Prior it was usually an incorrect address. They, at one point, had me “living” at my former employers address.. lol i worked a lot but not THAT much! I thought that was kind of funny. I have had a couple of my creditors STOP reporting my payments so that kind of put my credit status in a weird limbo. I have also had them incorrectly report my high balances.
The latter being the case today as well. I found 2 accounts that have the incorrect high balances listed. I want these high balances listed because i have since paid these accounts in full and on time and i want that to be seen by potential future creditors should there be any.
The other disputed item is a delinquent pay off from 15 years ago. I since paid it, but at a % of the value because i was horrible with managing money back in my very early 20’s. Well according to the info provided on this credit reporting agency’s website, that type of information should only be on for 10 years.. Do the math. Dispute filed.
I also read, sometime last year, that one of the major credit card companies, (think ‘land of the free’ on a very fast train), fails to report monthly account statuses. Low and behold! Mine didn’t either. SO! dispute filed, and i have to contact them to tell them to send my credit data to the agencies.
I am very happy that i have been keeping tabs on my credit history for these last few years. I feel organized in my financial life, and i can have confidence that the people who are checking my financial background, be it for employment or for future monetary purposes, see that i am responsible with my money.
So ask yourself why you haven’t done this? Is it because you don’t want to spend the money? For $15.00 i was able to get the birdseye view of everything financial in my life. That is a potential savings had i not kept tabs on it because a lower credit score means higher interest rates across the board.
Is your other excuse “i dont have the time or can’t be bothered?” tsk tsk tsk.. No time? You are reading this blog aren’t you? In the amount of time it took you to read this you can have your credit report dumped into your e-mail box.
Disputes (should you have any) are a click away. In the days of old you used to have to write them a letter and request things. Now, through the advancement of technology and companies wanting to make things easier and safer for themselves and the consumer, you no longer have to do that.
So do your financial self a favor. Run that report, check everything, and dispute whatever you have to to make it right. You will thank yourself in the end.
